Go To The Largo Nature Preserve For A Hard To Beat Bird Photography Experience

largo natur preserve, sign, entrance

The Largo Nature Preserve is a little-known gem in the heart of Pinellas county. It is home to a very wide variety of birds, mammals and aquatic life, including river otters. This small park is centered around a patch of hardwood swamp and a pond, both accessible by well maintained boardwalks. Surrounded by golf courses, a large electric transformer station, busy roads and a model-airplane field, it is a quiet haven for an amazing amount of wildlife and the people who know about it.

One frequent but irregular visitor to this preserve is the roseate spoonbill. These birds seldom make it farther north than Florida, and are not common in most of the state. They are the only birds that are naturally(genetically) bright pink, not depending on their diet for the coloration. The spoonbills' distinctive color makes them easy to pick out even at great distances. They tend to be warier of people and harder to approach closely than many of the other wading birds.

Other attractions of this park include a paddling route along the canals to Seminole Lake almost six miles to the south and nesting boxes for osprey, wood ducks and bats. Eastern cottontail rabbits and gray squirrels are very common and river otters, raccoon, oppossum and armadillo are all seen regularly, making this a small but excellent wildlife photography spot.

This park is located in Largo, Florida at the intersection of East Bay and Highland Avenue. All paths are fully paved and all boardwalks are wide, making the entire preserve handicapped accessible. The main trail has foot and bike/skate lanes. There are lighted flush toilets, covered picnic tables and benches at intervals along the trail. A butterfly garden is to the north of the parking area.
