Go To John Chestnut Park For A Variety Of Florida Scenery And Great Wildlife Viewing

sign, entrance, john chestnut park

John Chestnut Park, part of the Pinellas County park system, is a sprawling 255 acres on the southeast corner of Tarpon Lake. The many backwater sloughs within this park are the end of the Brooker Creek drainage and supply much of the fresh water flowing into the lake. It is a nice mix of riverine/swamp and pine/palm hammock habitats that provides a home to most of the wildlife species native to Florida.

Deer are abundant and commonly seen in the early morning hours throughout this Florida park. The complete menagerie of wading birds and aquatic reptiles and amphibians are numerous as well. Several species of woodpeckers, raptors and songbirds also call this place home and will be heard and possibly seen by most visitors.

There is a boat ramp and boardwalk on the shores of Tarpon Lake, where power boating is allowed. A kayak/canoe trail is a good option for those seeking a quieter experience and a closer approach to the wildlife. A total of three nature trails allow for peaceful meanderings even on crowded weekends. Thirteen covered picnic shelters and a large dog area make this a family and pet friendly park. Many picturesque wooden bridges span the sloughs, creek and canals.
