Inner Photography Is All About Visual Communication And Mental Image Tools

Inner photography has nothing to do with equipment or subject or technique. Inner photography means taking advantage of photography’s power to communicate on the emotional, symbolic and spiritual levels, often in a more direct and meaningful way than written or spoken word allows. It means acknowledging and using photography as an effective method of self expression and personal creativity to contribute to the larger community of the world. It is having photography as an integral part of a well-rounded lifestyle.

Very occasionally, just by being in the right place at the right time with a camera, a photographer will snap a “great” image, one that resonates in many hearts. It is an extremely rare event. Most often these “universal images” are taken by photographers who work very hard to get them, who feel the connection themselves and want to share it with others. This kind of photo almost requires emotion, even passion, between photographer and subject. Great portrait photographers love people and want to share the wonderful qualities they see in their sitters. The best nature and wildlife shooters love the earth and its wild inhabitants and want to share the beauty they see and inspire that same love of nature in their audience. Renowned architectural photographers feel reverence for the functionality and artistry of superbly designed buildings and strive to make others feel those qualities as well. We should all use this type of deep visual communication as our ideal.

My hope is that my photographs convey some of my feelings of wonder, peace, beauty, discovery, power and calm brought into my soul by nature. I never feel more fulfilled than when someone viewing my photos says “I can just feel the power in those clouds” or “that looks like such a magical place, I can feel the peace there.” My greatest achievements are not the images but the emotions conveyed by those images. Photography is a long and continuing adventure for me and I hope you will join me for a while on the journey.

I hope to spark your interest in this aspect of imaging and to show how it can become a path leading towards inner peace and serenity in a world that can often seem too fast and chaotic. Photography can be “the way” of Tao, the “focus” of Zen, the “prayer” of the major organized religions and the “concentration” of meditation. Like any of these other paths, it is most effective when practiced regularly and consciously and is incorporated into a daily routine.

Enjoy this part of the site. Use what seems right for you and let the rest flow past. “Wander without seeking and you will find what you need.”
