Indian Rocks Nature Preserve Provides Great Photography Of Roosting Night Herons

The Indian Rocks Nature Preserve is located just a few blocks north of the island end of the Walsingham causeway(Largo Narrows). This Florida park doesn't look like much from the entrance on Gulf Boulevard but has an extensive boardwalk through the tidal mangroves and along a backwater of the intercoastal waterway. It is well worth checking out and the beach is right across the street for a cooling swim in the Gulf of Mexico when you get done! This is an excellent park to photograph both yellow- and black-crowned night herons roosting in the mangrove trees during the daylight hours. A variety of other herons and egrets are also usually present, as well as the chance to see dolphins, jumping mullet and fishing brown pelicans in the intercoastal waterway. Fiddler crabs are abundant below the mangroves at low tide as well as other wildlife.

Other amenities at the Nature Preserve include an off-leash dog park, numerous covered rest and picnic areas with benches and tables, a children's playground and extensive lawns. It is very convenient to a variety of restaurants, shops and the beach. One of the few natural areas left on the barrier islands in this part of the sunshine state, this park is definitely worth a stop with your camera.
