George McGough Park Offers Variety To The Photographer

george mcgough park, sign, entrance, largo, florida

George McGough Park, in the Largo park system, has a variety of sites for photographers. It is primarily pine hammock with tall pines favored by nesting ospreys, herons and egrets. I have spotted woodpeckers, owls and hawks here as well. The park borders the intercoastal waterway and has an observation platform offering great scenic views from the Largo Narrows(Walsingham Causeway draw bridge) north to the Belaire causeway. Boardwalks and well maintained trails run through the interior and offer shade during the hot months.

This Florida park is located at the last traffic light on the mainland before crossing the draw bridge on the Walsingham causeway. The south side borders Walsingham Road and can be noisy from traffic but the park is plenty large enough to get away from all that and see plenty of wildlife and a wide selection of native plants.

There is also a playground for the children, a turtle pond teaming with turtles and wading birds, captive injured owls and raptors and covered picnic areas. Watching the boat traffic and the draw bridge in operation is always a pleasure. It is a pleasant stop on the way to or from Indian Rocks Beach or one of the many fine restaurants on the barrier islands.
