Great Blue Heron with Largemouth Bass, June 3, 2008
The heron followed its instincts and speared this large 7-8 pound bass that wandered into the shallows. The fish was so large that the bird could barely lift it. After spearing it twice more to ensure that it could not escape the heron realized it could never swallow such a large fish and abandoned it. The bass will be eaten by turtles and/or turkey vultures over the next few days.
